1. It's Baaaack! Welcome to the first Fleet 12 newsletter of 2003.

Yep, a few misguided people asked me to do this again, so you will get

these newsletters, hopefully before and after the regattas this year.

Remember that the important information about Fleet 12 will be posted on

the website at www.sfetchells.org so you really don't have to read these if

you don't want to. And (legal reminder) if you would like to be dropped

from this list, just reply with the words "I'D RATHER BE SAILING CATALINA

30s" as the subject. I'll get right to it. And if you know someone who

should be on the list, also let me know, in the usual way.

2. Annual Meeting scheduled for January 23, at 7PM

The annual meeting of Fleet 12, always a formal affair with lots of behind

the scenes politicking and arguments. Actually, it's the time when we

finalize our schedule, install the officers and talk about this year for

Fleet 12. Everyone is invited and beer and pizza will be provided. (When

you receive the evite, please RSVP, so we know if we need to get food for you.)

The meeting will be held on January 23 at 7PM in Emeryville CA. It's a very

convenient location, next to the 80 freeway, near the Bay Bridge, and this

building features the only known DeWitt mural of an Etchells in an office

building in California. To view that shrine alone is worth the trip.

The meeting will be held at the offices of Clausen Engineers, so our

distinguished Fleet Captain can write the whole thing off. Plus this way we

know he'll show up! Speaking of showing up, I will pick the Fleet Measurer

up that day at his place of work and bring him to the meeting. So you

should probably be able to get sails measured.

The contact info for the meeting site is:

1727 64th Street

Emeryville, California 94608

Phone: 510/655-4144

Fax: 510/655-1133

The map is here: http://www.clausenengineers.com/map.htm

Hope you can make it!

3. Board of Directors

At the December Board meeting, the following directors were elected to

serve Fleet 12 in 2003. Some of these titles may seem weird to you, but all

positions are all listed and explained in our Fleet 12 Bylaws, for example

the "Port Captain" is in charge of finding new members and making them feel

welcome after they join.

Hoffman - Fleet Measurer

Erickson - Port Captain

Kers - Fleet Captain

Moseley - Treasurer

Holder - Scorekeeper

Gordon - Secretary

Doug - Vice Captain/ Webmaster

Kriese - Director of Protocol

Congratulations to the 2003 Fleet Board of Directors -- You should all make

plans to attend the Annual Meeting, where the hand off of duties occurs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Tentative Schedule attached

The tentative Fleet 12 Schedule is attached. You will note that some events

are listed as Fleet Events, these are still subject to change. The events

hosted by Yacht Clubs are pretty much fixed, and the only real open item is

to consider the Marin Regatta, as in "Should we continue to do the Marin

Regatta?". This will be discussed at the annual meeting. You may be able to

cast your vote on the evite, too. After the Annual Meeting I'll send out a

schedule that's "Carved in Stone".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Fleet Membership Form Attached

The fleet membership form is attached. Go ahead, print it out, fill it out

and bring it to the meeting, or else send it in as soon as possible. Put

your crew on the Associate Member list. Then they'll get the magazines.

Make sure your emails are all up to date, then you'll get this newsletter

all year. Or maybe you really would rather sail Catalina 30s?

6. Details on Proposed Clinics/ Fleet 12 Coaching Program

On the proposed schedule, some days in 2003 have been set aside to do

clinics. Normally these are on Saturday of a weekend, with fleet racing to

follow on Sunday, in order to get the most out of the clinic. Our plan is

to do one, see how the turnout is and then do more if the fleet likes the

program. This plan has largely been conceived by Mark Sloane, and we will

discuss it at the Annual Meeting. Here is his take on it:

( By Mark Sloane [966] )

Fleet 12:

Knowing that the Worlds, North Americans and the Pacific Coast

Championships are coming to San Francisco Bay, I’m sure that we would all

like to see Fleet 12 do well in all three regattas. I would like to sketch

out a plan for the fleet to help us “up our game” at these world class

regattas.  It is only a sketch that will require tweaking to make it work

for the maximum number of boats.  Your comments and advice will be

necessary to make this successful.

I propose that Fleet 12 organize clinics with coaches for 2003.  After

2003, we can tweak the program and crank it up a notch for the 2004 season

in preparation for the North Americans. After the 2004 season, a full court

press for the Worlds.

I had the opportunity to work out some details with Rusty Canada of Doyle

Sails.  Rusty is on the 505 Olympic team and was very enthusiastic about

the benefits we would gain from coaching and he would be delighted to

participate. I believe Doyle is willing to run the whole deal.  They will

provide the whaler and coaches, (we would have input on the coaches). If we

want to add Jud Smith for one of the 4 weekends, we would have to add some

dollars. There are plenty of CA sailors that would work too…..Vince Brun, etc.

Anyway, let me know how you guys feel about this.  My gut is that every

sailor in fleet 12 would benefit from an Olympic style training

program.  Obviously my team and I aboard 966 have the most to learn and

therefore the most to gain.  I’d be happy to do something extra, buy lunch

or booze for a few of the days.

Let me know what you think and how we can make this idea work……sloane

Can't wait to get out there this year ...... I hear Healy will be coming

out some as well ....

From: Ross Morrissey <ross(AT)photoworks.com>

Please help my friend Charley. He's a talented sailor who just moved from

Seattle to Berkeley, Charley is most at home either end of a Star - but

don't hold that against him - he's done a great job when we've lured him

out on the Etchells - and he's in demand on those boats with life lines

too. He's a hoot to sail with, whether you're double-handing an Etchells in

a breeze, or duking it out with R-C boats in his Star. You can get hold of

Charley on his cell at: (206) 852-7854 or charley@rathkopf.org.

receives mail at this address.

Merry Flipping Christmas to Kathryn, too. What is she doing reading my

mail? She ought to sail Catalina 30s... in the ocean.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok. End of the issue. Go back to staring out the window. Winter is almost

over, do you remember how to clap on and haul a sheet, how to trim a sail,

and get 'er to haul the mail? See you at the Annual Meeting!
