1. Elite Keel Race Wrap Up (races held May 18/19)

Just something light and quick about this regatta held by the San Francisco Yacht Club in some pretty trying conditions. Results, as usual are posted at www.sfetchells.org, in this case at http://sfetchells.org/Etchells%202002/Elite%20Keel%20results.html.

A very up and down weekend, with some of the strongest winds yet this season on Saturday, a beautiful day, and Sunday absolutely miserable, cold, no wind and then, finally, as it often does on rainy days, the weather clearing so the RC could get some races off.

On 1168 we sailed with Brian Berger doing the bow for the first time this year. Saturday was pretty much survival conditions, especially downwind, as the Race Committee set up pretty well right in the center of the slot. They also set up longish courses, and picked the longish (5 leg) permutations of same. The wind started strong and steady and pretty much built from there. The first race started out a strong medium, going right seemed so right, and yet 1169 won the beat from the left side. A shift downwind, combined with some excellent surfing on their part, left no passing lanes and they extended all the way around the course.

The second race was heavy air, on 1168 we sailed a pretty conservative beat, rounded the top mark first, and it was the first time I've heard Peter Vessella raise his voice on the boat this year, and maybe I did let the brand new kite flog twice, but I thought we recovered pretty quick, the (heavy air) kite is OK (Thanks Vince!) and at least we didn't round down twice like we did in the race sailed in similar conditions. The good thing was that every time we did something bad, I took a glance back and saw that we had even more separation on the boats behind us. There wasn't that much tactical stuff going on in this race. Keep the rig up, gybe early, get the kite down, cover the fleet. That was pretty much it. When the RC saw that a few boats didn't even bother to set spinnakers in this race, they blew off the 3rd race. Probably a good call, and welcomed by most of the fleet. On 1168 we thought it was a bad break.

Sunday was rainy from the beginning, cold and rainy and miserable and most boats only had one person visible on their way to the course, the other two passengers trying to stay warm 'down below'. We kept trying to lure some of the other Etchells back to the YC, but no one accepted. After a while, the air did clear, the wind came filled in and the RC got off two quick races in the medium air, quick college-style affairs, "though in college my crew was cuter" said Henry Fischer. On 1168 we figured that we had to beat Moseley/1091 in at least one race, and though we didn't beat him in either race, we stayed close to them though, losing by a combined distance of 3 feet, and were nervously happy with two 4s for the day, as Mr Sutak lit up the course in front of us. His crew was cuter in college, too.

The final score was as close as fleet racing can be with only 3 points separating the top 4 boats, with 3 of the top 4 boats getting a bullet in at least one race, and a tie for first on overall points. Vessella/1168 won the regatta on a tiebreaker, and the SFYC presented a lovely chrome ice bucket champagne chiller which was (sadly) accepted at the SFYC by an imposter and probably lost to Peter Vessella forever. Jeff Mosely won a lovely silver frame for second place, and since it was his birthday this seemed appropriate.

The other highlight of the regatta for me was meeting two of Jeff Moseley's brothers, both of whom were out sailing Melges that day. We sat there on the SFYC deck, Jeff, his brothers, plus Jeff Nehms/1145 and crew, and assorted others, having a few beverages and admiring the view, celebrating Jeff's birthday, when it came to light that Jeff had been mentioned in THE NEW YORK TIMES that very same day, and Jeff was not completely happy about it. The article was quickly produced and framed in the new frame. And there was much rejoicing.

2. Fleet Run Race 6/1/02 NOR "The 1st Annual T.I Moseley Classic"

Welcome to "The 1st Annual T.I Moseley Classic", which Jeff has named in honor of his grandfather, Tim Moseley, a local gentleman with a great nautical background. This regatta will be a fine addition to the Etchells tradition.

It will be held in a new venue, the Paradise Cay, North Bay Course, which is often used by other fleets.

Jeff Sez:

>Please observe the location of Red Rock and the Richmond San Rafael
>Bridge in relation to Paradise Cay on the attached chart. Unlike the Marin
>Yacht Club regatta, we will be sailing Southwest of the Richmond San
>Rafael Bridge off the backside of the Tiburon Peninsula. (Near Paradise
>Park and The California City Submarine Net Depot, in front of Paradise
>Cay on the chart). The Committee boat will be a Columbia 40 Sailboat
>anchored in the vicinity. As you get closer we will corral you with the
>Whaler. The first gun will be at 11:00am. Beware of the PHRF HDA
>fleet sailing in the same general vicinity, off the North entrance to the
>Cay, with a Tiburon YC Race Committee. Follow the other Etchells to
>our starting area.

The sailing instructions will be the same used in other fleet races we have held this year, with the location of racing modified per this announcement.

Fleet Run Event Sailing Instructions to be found here: http://sfetchells.org/Etchells%202002/Fleet%20Events-%20Race%20Instructions.htm

Kers will run this event on the water and needs one or two helpers. For questions, contact Kers by email kcyc@aol.com. or call at 510-655-4144.

3. Notice of Party NOP after Fleet Run Race (THIS WEEKEND)

Kers sez:
>This Saturday will be a class run event with a couple of new twists.
>We have tried to find a venue where the fleet meets after racing. We
>will do this by sailing off Paradise Cay starting at 11:00 am and then
>have burgers and beer at [Jeff's brother] Jonny Moseley's home in the
>Cay at 3:00 PM. The plan is to sail into Jonny's dock after the racing,
>have a social hour or two, and then sail home in daylight. This could
>become a very popular event as our fleet has been searching for an
>event with a social program convenient to all. We can do this and
>still get back to our respective hard stands by 6:00 PM. Families
>are invited to meet us landside at the party.

>AWARD PRESENTATION-BURGERS AND BEER(Right after the last race)
>After sailing the races, you can get to Jonny's 90' dock by entering the
>South Cay inlet. Go straight for the center of the cut after passing a
>channel mark with a flag on it. Jonny's place is the second on the right.
>We encourage Jeff Moseley to win the last race so he can lead us in.

Jeff sez:
>You will see Red Spanish Mediterranean Tile roofs on the South end
>of Paradise Cay (Paradise Cay is a neighborhood on the water and
>we will be sailing in front of it). This is where the Channel entrance is.
>As you get closer you will see a small sphere buoy with a flag on it
>approximately 100 yards from the entrance, go to that buoy and line
>yourself up with center of the channel and make a straight shot into
>the cut. I will escort everyone in with a tender to the dock in front of the house.

I encourage EVERYONE to sail in this new venue for Etchells on the bay. "I hope Bill Barton will remember" if the fleet ever used to sail here back in the old days, but it's a first for me on the Etchells. I do remember sailing several other boats over in this area, and Paradise Cay is a beautiful, little known area of the bay. Like Kers said, we have been looking for a place which is geographically desirable for the fleet to get together after the racing, and this could be it.

Hope you come sailing, hope you come to the party immediately afterwards. If you have someone coming by land, 3PM would be the time, and 103 Jamaica Street, Tiburon, CA is the place. Be there or be square. From 101 Take Tamalpais Dr Exit and go East, R-San Clemente, L-Paradise Dr, L-Antilles Way, L-Martinique Ave, R-Jamaica St. 103 is at the end of the street.

Don't put your boat away first, just sail over after the last race.

If you have questions about the party call Jeff Moseley @ 415-435-1652.

4. Rules Corner: Scoring Notes and Tiebreaker Review

The last two regattas, Elite Keel and the Second Fleet Run Regatta, have ended in ties on points for first place. The scores I sent out in the last newsletter for the Second Fleet Run Regatta were wrong. The fleet scorekeeper and the website are right. I learned something, and here it is.

>US sailing rulebook Appendix A.8. ³ If there is a score tie between two or
>more boats , each boatıs race scores shall be listed in order of best to
>worst, and at the first point where there is a difference the tie shall be
>broken in favour of the boats with the best score.²

Second Fleet Regatta: 1169 and 1091, and both boats end with eight points. This means that Jeff Mosely dropped to second with his 3-3-1-1 scores against the 1-1-4-2 of Henry and Doug. Both have two bullets, but Henry and Doug have a second.

Elite Keel: 1168 and 1090 tie this time. Both boats end with eleven points. Again, Jeff drops to second with 3-2-3-3 against 2-1-4-4 for Vessella. Here it's easier, to win the regatta, you had to win a race. What's clear is this Jeff is fast in the late races, whether it's the late pair or the Sunday pair!

The complete story including what happens if the scorecards are the same is available for sale at www.ussailing.org, or check the rulebook you keep in your bathroom but it's probably just "who beat who in the last race" or something.

6. The real Jim Carrick/776 introduction

Here's a little something that I asked Jim to write so we can get to know him a little better.

Jim just bought 776 Air Tuna from Jim Gregory.

From: james_g_carrick@apl.com

>"jim" is just fine.
>yes, Saturday was quite fun, and nice to see i haven't "lost it"
>completely since the last time i skippered a boat (about 4 years ago).
>in terms of background it is large and varied. my father was a World
>Class Snipe sailor and while i didn't get his genius for yacht racing
>i did get a pretty good, fun education.
>i've sailed and raced everything from dinghies to Maxi's though last
>20 years has been more oriented to raising a family (4 kids), which
>means more work than play.
>my last racing was while living on the East Coast where i split my
>sailing time between dinghies (Thistle.... getting the kids oriented
>towards sailing instead of horses) and bigger boats (Navigator in the
'>96 and '98 Newport-Bermuda races).
>Grew up at RYC Junior Program, left dinghies too early for keel boats
>and BIG BOATS.....the lure of TransPacs and Indian Ocean atoll
>cruising starting as a teenager was too much to resist.
>nice to be back on the bay, sailing out of Richmond, in a great class
>like the Etchells.
>the "plan" is to have my older two boys (Ted (17) and Richard (15) be
>my primary crew (when their not taking SATs, Boy Scouts etc.!)
>introduce yourself please when we cross paths off the water.
>regards, jim
