1. Results from Saturday 5/4
Saturday, May 5, 2002 was the second fleet race of the season, this
one hosted by Jim Gregory with some Whaler help provided by Jeff Mosely.

(Synopsis by Jeff Holder, as 1168 did not sail--the Hillsborough Concours
d'Elegance was this weekend and our '57 Mercedes was featured at the
show and chasing the Porsches down Hwy 1)
The top 3 boats fought it out, with 1091 winning the regatta by wining
the last race, and thus the tiebreaker with 1169. 1169 was over early
in the third race, and they took there time to decide whether to go
back and restart, after they went back, they made a very impressive
bid to get back
into the hunt, sailing from a very DFL position to finish 4th in that
race.
John Sutak on 901 had excellent speed all day, and parlayed that speed
into 3 second place finishes and one third place. Jeff Moseley on 1091
continued with his hot hand after doing so well in the San Diego Midwinters,
winning Saturday's event with two thirds and two bullets.
The fleet welcomes Jim Carrick, who just bought Jim Gregory's 776. Jim
had a few nice mid fleet finishes before retiring after two races.
Wind started out relatively light (10 - 12kts) and built as the day
went on to about 15 -18 kts. Although we had an ebb tide, the water
was pretty flat.
It was a classic Circle race, in that boats were forced to play either
the pressure on the left, or the tidal advantages on the right. Additionally,
the boats that punched hard right at the top, were rewarded with a nice
3 or 4 degree lift all day as they approached the mark on starboard.
The first race had a pretty short beat in order to stay out of the way
of the cruisers, (Oops, I mean Vallejo racers). Once they were gone,
Jim lengthened the beat. The overall race committee work was superb.

Jim Gregory, a long time member of Fleet 12 with 776, Air Tuna, is leaving
today to start an 18 month sailing adventure starting in New Zealand.
We all wish him the best of luck. Besides being a very consistent racer,
missing very few races, Jim often raced with his family, including his
brother, his wife and his sons. Jim filled many positions on the Board,
has been Scorekeeper and was the developer of the Fleet 12 website for
2 years. Besides all this responsibility, Jim has done very well on
the racecourse, and has done particularly well travelling to regattas,
including good results in San Diego.
Jim, his wife Deb, and his two sons Chris and Pat, will take delivery
of their very racy Schumacher 55 very soon and sail the Pacific with
her, the current plan is to be back in San Francisco in 18 months.

3. Welcome to Jim Carrick
Among other things that Jim Gregory has done well, at a very busy time
for him, was to sell his fast boat to someone who will race it actively.
This weekend was the first race for 776 under the new management, James
Carrick, watched by the old guard on the RC boat.
