1. Marin Regatta Wrap-up

The Marin Regatta was another fun regatta sailed in changeable conditions.

If last year was the year that it blew hard for every Etchells Regatta,

this year is the year of the changeable conditions. Must be El Nino or

something. I sailed Sunday all day with no shirt after suiting up and still

freezing on Saturday.

I'm sorry for the late, lame wrap up of this regatta, but I just waited too

long and don't remember that much anymore. The conditions were building all

day on Saturday and the sail back to the club on 1168 after 3 bullets was

really brutal, as both the wind and the chop built in the river. We went

over one bump really hard, and the boom broke. Later Peter Vessella said he

thought it was a backstay release at the same moment that loaded up the

sheet so much that it broke the boom, but we'll never know for sure. Be

careful with this operation on your own boat, though!

Thankfully the north nature of the wind was such that we were able to jib

reach back to Richmond, fix the boom on Sunday morning and go sailing again.

2. "San Francisco Bay Etchells Championship Regatta" is this weekend

The regatta this weekend will have Sailing Instructions, however at this

time they are not posted at www.sfetchells.org, they probably will be soon.

They will definitely be available at both SFYC and RYC on Friday by noon in

paper form. As soon as I get a copy, I will email them to this list. As a

last resort, you will be able to get a copy from the RC Boat on the

starting line both Friday and Saturday.

IMPORTANT CHANGE: By popular demand, the weigh-in procedure has been

scrapped, and Crew do not have to weigh in at either club before the

racing. Weight Limits, and all other class rules are still applicable, but

there will be no pre-race weigh ins.

Notice of Race and Entry Form are at www.sfetchells.org You can send funds

by Paypal if you want to scottst@well.com or just send a check to the

address on the form,.

This weekend is our only 3 day regatta. Many of you know that the fleet has

bid for and successfully been awarded, the 2005 Etchells World Championships.

This weekend is part way along the track to that huge undertaking. Next

year, 2003, at about the same time, we will host the Pacific Coast

Championships. The following year, 2004, the North Americans, and in 2005,

the Worlds.

This means gettting a yacht club, or two, up to speed with doing the race

committee, hosting the regatta and the parties, and everything else that

goes along with running a World Championships with up to 100 boats.

It's important to note that in Etchells, the Worlds is hosted by a fleet,

not by a Yacht Club, so the format is at this point not set in stone. Your

Board of Directors is trying to work out all the details for these upcoming

regattas and they will be asking for your help.

Studying at USF and new to the area. I am 6'8" and 260lbs. The majority of

my sailing has been in England on big boats, but I am desperately trying to

start sailing Etchells. I have crewed on 6m's (Lion, and Conch Fritters),

FARR 40's (Independent Bear, Chernikeef), as well as FARR 52's (Bear of

Britain, and Chernikeef II), and a SWANN 60 (Island Fling). I was also on

Victory '83 last summer at the America's Cup Jubilee.

I have been associated with the Lightning class for over 40 years. I owned

3 boast in the past. The class has become extinct in San Francisco and it

is my wish to join the Etchells fleet now with the hops of a purchase

within the year. I would like to get as much experience in the boat as

possible by crewing for others at this time. I'm 56 years old and would

make a good middle man at my weight of 270 lbs. My expertise is in handling

the chute especially when jibing. I think I can also offer 30 years of

tactical advise when called upon. Currently retired and can travel.

4. Photo Boat needed for Saturday

Fleet 12 has hired a photographer to take photos for trophies for the

Regatta on Saturday. These photos will also be available for purchase. But

we don't have a good photo boat at this time.

Anyone have a boat available? We will pay for fuel.

OK, that's all there is. I know it's a lot to digest, but once you're out

on the course, all these thoughts will go away. I promise. Go away now

yourself. Go race. Or practice. Ours is scheduled for Thursday night. When

is yours?
