1. Etchells San Francisco Bay Championship
The second Etchells Championship Regatta was sailed August 23 -25, with a
format consisting of two races Friday afternoon, 3PM start, and three races
each on Saturday and Sunday.
The regatta came down to the wire with Doug Morss/ Henry Fischer/ 1169
duking it out with Jeff Moseley/ 1091 and winning by a single point.
Results are posted at www.sfetchells.org Chris Raney/ 969 put in a great
performance on Sunday to take third place in a tiebreaker over Kers
Clausen/ 977. To say it was a close regatta doesn't quite explain it, and
there were lots of calculations going on during the last run of the regatta
on several boats.
This was yet another regatta sailed in every condition we encounter. Friday
was glorious, and we sailed in the only sunny patch of the bay. Light air,
just 8-12 knots but steady, and flat water. It's easy to forget sometimes
that the bay can be this benign, even user friendly. No other sailboats
around, and a wonderful Etchells fleet to sail with, does it get any better
than that?
It was the first day of Etchells race driving for me, and I for one was
glad the simulator had most of the "kinks" turned off.
Saturday more of the same, but with mostly overcast conditions, again light
breeze and flat water, until the last run where the skies opened up and the
wind increased, probably to 16 knots.
We sailed both Friday and Saturday with a guy from the Crew List, Archie
Kasnet. He has not sailed Etchells before, and I had not driven, so we were
a natural pair. But we had a great time, and I would recommend Archie to
anyone looking for crew. He will be a natural bow person for someone. Give
him a call.
Sunday got sunny early and was sailed in fresher breeze as the day went on.
We started the first race with blocks behind the mast and ended the last
beat with the backstay maxed out, and the crew at max hike. The last race
was probably about 20 knots and boats were rolling around, dropping out and
failing to gybe nicely and so forth. The near broach demonstrated by 1169
at the finish line of the last race was particularly impressive.

2. Etchells San Francisco Bay Championship photos
Congratulations to the winners of the SF Bay Championship Regatta.
As promised, photos are available online. See below.
Winners of the regatta should determine which photos they want, this could
be 3 separate photos, and email the address of the images to me. Remember
that 1st place is "portrait" format, while 2nd and 3rd are landscape.
Some of the sequences are really good.
See for instance the sequence which starts here
http://adrenalinimages.com/etchells_friday/ppages/ppage129.html it
documents a really nice port and starboard foul, and the ensuing circles.
Or the sequence here from the first race on Friday,
http://adrenalinimages.com/etchells_friday/ppages/ppage110.html which shows
me winning the start at the gun on 1168, failing to foot for speed, Bill
Barton winning the pin, and driving right out under from the fleet (and
me). You might remember the big lead he established in that race? This was
a big part of it.
Enjoy.

Okay, it's over, delete this message and go back to work. You have a month
to lick those wounds, fix those boats and practice, practice, practice.
